What is a celebrant-led wedding?
A celebrant-led wedding is the ceremony part of your day — the words, the vows, the rings, the moment everyone remembers — written entirely around you. There’s no set wording to follow and no list of things you’re not allowed to say. We can tell the story of how you met (the funny version, if you like), involve your children, your parents or your best friends, add a ritual that means something, and choose music, readings and vows that are completely yours.
Couples across Leicester and Leicestershire choose a celebrant because they want their guests to feel something: to laugh, to well up, and to walk away saying “that was so them”.
How the legal bit works in England
In England, celebrants aren’t currently allowed to perform the legal part of a marriage. Most couples simply do the legal paperwork separately with the register office — often a short, simple ceremony with two witnesses, before or after the big day — and then have the ceremony they actually want with me. You give notice at the register office for the area you live in; if you live in the city that’s Leicester City Council, and elsewhere in the county it’s Leicestershire County Council’s registration service.
The Government consulted on wedding law reform in 2026, including whether independent celebrants should be able to conduct legal weddings. Nothing has changed yet, and I’ll keep couples posted.
Your ceremony, wherever you like
Because the legal part is done separately, your ceremony doesn’t have to happen in a licensed room at a fixed time. A back garden in Oadby, a barn near Melton, a woodland clearing in Charnwood, a marquee on the family farm, or the terrace of a hotel you love — if the landowner says yes, so do I. Many couples find this saves money too, because a venue without a licence usually costs less to hire for a ceremony.
Rituals to make it yours
A ritual gives your guests something to see and remember. Some ideas couples love:
- Handfasting — tying your hands together with ribbons or cords chosen by you or your families
- Unity candle or sand ceremony — two become one, beautifully simple
- Ring warming — your rings are passed around your guests to collect their good wishes
- Wine box or love letters — sealed away to open on a future anniversary
- Tree planting — something that grows with your marriage
Or we create something brand new that only makes sense for you two.

We can’t thank Hayley enough for making our wedding day so incredibly special. From our very first meetings, Hayley took the time to truly get to know us as a couple and understand exactly what we envisioned for our ceremony. Her thoughtful advice and suggestions were invaluable in making our day even more meaningful than we could have imagined.
The ceremony itself was absolutely beautiful, and Hayley’s personal touch made it truly unique to us. Her warmth and wonderful sense of humor shone through, creating a relaxed and joyful atmosphere. We received so many compliments from our guests about how personal and beautifully delivered the ceremony was – they all agreed Hayley was fantastic!
Questions people ask
Is a celebrant wedding legal in Leicester?
The celebrant-led ceremony itself isn’t the legal part of your marriage in England. You register your marriage separately with the register office (Leicester City Council if you live in the city, Leicestershire County Council elsewhere in the county), before or after your ceremony. Your celebrant ceremony is still the one everyone will remember.
Can you do a ceremony at a licensed wedding venue?
Yes. Lots of couples have a celebrant ceremony at a licensed hotel, barn or country house — you just won’t use the venue’s registrar. Check with your venue that they welcome celebrant-led ceremonies (most do).
Will you rush off to another wedding?
Never. I only book one wedding ceremony a day, so if things run late there’s no pressure on anyone.
Do we get to write our own vows?
Absolutely — and if the thought of writing them fills you with dread, I’ll help. We can also write vows you repeat after me, or a mix of both.
